I arrived here from Iain's SciFi background, which is incredibly complex, with layers upon layers of interconnected stories, interesting and well developed characters (esp. It's an interesting book if you're interested in the subject and explains how somebody develops that kind of personality disorder, but don't expect an engaging story or psychopaths of the "character quality" of Hannibal Lecter. The book reads as characters basically act and react upon "random" events of violence, explained with greater detail than the story itself, and it's difficult to follow a backstory or evolution of the characters. I believe it does not develop the characters enough, the story is feeble and flashbacks don't really help. ![]() What I have aproblem with is with the "shallowness" of the writing. What I like about the book is the setting and the narration style, both of which are fitting. Personally, I don't have a problem with the underlying subject but caveat emptor and all that. ![]() There's violence, sadism and a total lack of empathy. How will you ever answer to Christ for letting the people carry on so disgracefully and not attending to the duties of your office even for a moment? One can only hope judgment does not strike you! You command the Sacrament in one kind only, insist on the observance of your human ways, and yet are unconcerned whether the people know the Lord’s Prayer, the Creed, the Ten Commandments, or indeed any of God’s Word. What these people have mastered, however, is the fine art of tearing all Christian liberty to shreds. Yet all the people are supposed to be Christians, have been baptized, and receive the Holy Sacrament even though they do not know the Lord’s Prayer, the Creed, or the Ten Commandments and live like poor animals of the barnyard and pigpen. How pitiable, so help me God, were the things I saw: the common man, especially in the villages, knows practically nothing of Christian doctrine, and many of the pastors are almost entirely incompetent and unable to teach. The deplorable, miserable conditions which I recently observed when visiting the parishes have constrained and pressed me to put this catechism of Christian doctrine into this brief, plain, and simple form. Martin Luther, to all faithful and godly pastors and preachers: grace, mercy, and peace be yours in Jesus Christ, our Lord. ![]() ![]() The town’s only attraction, a minor one at that, is the ‘bar-slash-restaurant’, the High-Ho. Small town America is wonderfully evoked here. Advertising itself with vain hope as one of the best small towns in America, it’s forty miles inland, so people simply pass through it on the way to the beach. The novel is set in Belleville, Delaware, ‘a town where strangers seldom stop on a Sunday evening’ – or any other time, for that matter. Set in the 1990s, it reaches back to the 1930s noir thrillers of James McCain (think The Postman Always Rings Twice, Double Indemnity) to provide an enthralling mystery that reveals itself slowly and inexorably, keeping the reader guessing right up to the end. ![]() ![]() And Sunburn is arguably her finest so far. Lippman is a superb novelist, intelligent and stylish, ‘one of the finest writers in America’ as Mark Billingham is quoted as saying on the cover of this, her latest novel – note that he doesn’t say ‘crime writers’. She’s known as a crime writer, but if that’s not your genre of choice, don’t dismiss her novels, which rise far above its normal parameters. One was a police procedural and the other a standalone – Lippman’s output is fairly evenly divided between the two. ![]() We’ve reviewed two of Laura Lippman’s novels in Shiny, here and here. ![]() ![]() ![]() As the idea and the feelings of loss consumed me, I began writing the story of Brynn and her realization that her freedom had been stolen without ever realizing it consciously. I like to do things spur of the moment, and living under this type of order and scrutiny was a horrifying and yet somehow realistic idea. As I saw the story unfold, it was almost as if the government spoke within my head, directing me in every aspect of life, invading my personal thoughts and dreams. A Note From the Author: inDIVISIBLE began as a disturbing dream in which the government had taken control of our lives on even the most basic level. Once removed, she must run to save her life - with a boy she barely knows, a boy who holds her future and heart in his hands. She knows to survive, she has to remove the one thing that gives her substance, security and transport, the one thing the Alliance relies on to track each Citizen of One United. ![]() What's worse is learning she's the next target on their kill list. Brynn's utopia is shattered when she learns her life has been a lie constructed by the very government she's trusted to make her decisions for her. ![]() ![]() ![]() Soon it becomes clear that the blackout is a symptom (or is it a cause?) of something larger-and nothing is safe. Shortly after they arrive, however, the family’s holiday is interrupted by a knock on the door: The house’s owners, a prosperous older Black couple-George Washington and his wife, Ruth-have shown up unannounced because New York City has been plunged into a blackout and their Park Avenue high-rise apartment didn’t feel safe. On a reassuringly sunny summer day, Amanda, an account director in advertising Clay, a college professor and their children, Archie, 15, and Rose, 13, make their way from Brooklyn to a luxury home (swimming pool! hot tub! marble countertops!) in a remote area of Long Island they’ve rented for a family vacation. ![]() An interrupted family vacation, unexpected visitors, a mysterious blackout-something is happening, and the world may never be the same. ![]() ![]() ![]() They meet in a cemetery and quietly begin a friendship that crosses age barriers. I was immersed in their individual stories and their collective potential for happiness. By the end I had fallen in love with the main characters, the aging Arthur and the young Maddy who is covered with the sadness of being different in so many ways. A rather short book that rightfully flows from beginning to end with only double line spacing to mark changes or pauses in the storyline, it is best with no chapter breaks. ![]() The Story of Arthur Truluv is a beautiful, delicate surprise. Those practices keep even my subconscious honest.
